Is A Cracked Shower Base Dangerous

A cracked shower base poses several potential dangers:

- If the crack is substantial and the cavity beneath it is sizable, using the shower base can lead to a hazardous situation where your foot may break through, exposing sharp edges that could cut the skin.

- Additionally, there is a risk of water seeping through the crack, collecting underneath the base, and causing water damage to the adjacent walls or any nearby timber structures.

It's important not to delay attending to the crack once it's noticed, refraining from using the shower until it's promptly addressed.

Why Do Shower Bases Crack

Cracks in shower bases typically result from inadequate support underneath, rendering the base susceptible to damage.

- In single-story houses built on concrete slab, cracks commonly form around drainage points due to an unfilled cavity beneath the shower base during installation.

- First-floor showers and single-story houses on stumps may experience a loss of structural support in the floor lining from water leakage or improper plumbing installation, leading to cracks where the shower base lacks support.

- Apartments with concrete floors often encounter cracks caused by a cavity under the shower base, stemming from initial plumbing installation or shortcomings in the design of the shower base.

What Repair Options Are Available?

There are 5 main options available to fix your cracked shower base the following is from the cheapest option to the most expensive option:

1. **Temporary Band-Aid Fix (Not Recommended):**
- Utilize a 2-part putty filler and silicone available at hardware stores to seal the crack. However, this is a temporary solution as micro cracks may reappear when pressure is applied, leading to water leakage. This method does not address the underlying issue and is visibly noticeable.

2. **Professional Repair (highly Recommended- the most value for money):**
- Our recommended solution involves exposing a portion of the shower base, filling the cavity underneath with concrete, restoring and sealing the shower base, and applying a 3mm DFT Wet area epoxy. This comprehensive approach addresses the root cause of the issue. We provide a 10-year warranty on the repaired area and a 3-year warranty on the epoxy application.

3. **Applying a 6mm fiberglass layer to the current shower base**

Enhancing the existing shower base with a 6mm fiberglass layer can effectively seal cracks and provide adequate reinforcement. While this solution may be viable, particularly under budget constraints, it's not universally mandated and should be considered based on individual circumstances.

4. **Shower Base Replacement with Minimal Tile Removal:**
- This option involves replacing the shower base by removing the surrounding wall tiles and shower screen. Some services may remove only the bottom row of wall tiles for base removal. However, this process can damage the panels behind the tiles, necessitating reinstallation of new panels and waterproofing. Due to potential issues with waterproofing continuity, we do not recommend this method.

4. **Complete Shower Renovation (Recommended for Long-Term viability):**
- For a comprehensive solution, the entire shower base can be replaced correctly to mitigate the risk of water leakage. This involves removing the shower screen, all wall tiles, and panels behind the tiles. New villaboards are installed, the cavity under the shower base is addressed, waterproofing is applied according to regulations, and new tiles are installed with grouting and silicone work. This option constitutes a small shower renovation that ensures long-term durability. If budget allows, we strongly recommend this comprehensive approach.
